Description
The nickname "Pjeirefretters" (horse-eaters) was given to the people of Vilvoorde in the 18th century when boats on the canal were pulled by horses. Old animals ended up on the plate. Horse steak is still a specialty of some Vilvoorde restaurants. During this walk you will explore the center of Vilvoorde opened up by the E19, the Brussels-Scheldt sea canal and the Brussels-Antwerp railroad line. Along the way, you will pass the neoclassical town hall, the 16th-century Dominican monastery and the penitentiary, one of the first "modern" prisons in the country. It's nice walking along the banks of the river and at the Canal Park you'll discover the dammed Zenne and the charming Zenne path.
