Yesterday - Gilze en Rijen, The Netherlands

Farmers' Circuit Gilze

41.9 km

This bike ride starts in Gilze, mainly known for the Gilze-Rijen military airfield and its history during World War II. ...This airfield was taken over by the German Luftwaffe after the Dutch capitulation in 1940. Until August 15, 1944, Gilze-Rijen underwent multiple bombings by Allied troops, which severely affected the surrounding region. After cycling around this airfield, this route mainly goes over quiet agricultural roads towards Tilburg. North Brabant plays an important role in Dutch gardening and agriculture, which becomes immediately apparent during this route. You also follow a stretch of the Bels Lijntje, which used to be the Tilburg-Turnhout railway line. It is delightful to cycle on this car-free bike path. There is no shortage of restaurants during this tour; in Rijen and Riel, you can certainly take a break. read more

13 May 2024 - Edam-Volendam, The Netherlands

around the Gouwzee

32.7 km

This region is known among other things for the cheese and authentic traditional clothing. Driving from Edam to Volendam..., you pass along the waterfront. At the end of the bike ride which is about 30 km long, you ride from Volendam to Edam along a busier road through the center of the "new" Volendam. In the old district near the Gauwzee, it is very touristy. There, you can find several photographers where you can have your picture taken in the authentic Volendam traditional clothing. From this dike, you take a ferry to Marken. The price was in 2023 €14 per adult with a bike for the one-way trip (you do not need to buy a return ticket because you ride back via the dike). Marken is a very beautiful small peninsula with wooden stake houses. Via the dike (usually very windy), you cycle to Monnickendam. There is a small church where an angel blows the hours instead of a bell ringing them. From Monnickendam, you cycle about twelve kilometers along the dike to Volendam via Katwoude. Then from Volendam back to Edam. read more

Castles, villas and nature in Ghent-West

60.1 km

You quickly leave the heart of Ghent through the Leie and the National Watersportbaan. Playing with the (Old) Leie, you ...go via manual crossings in Afsnee and the small Pontstraat, unpaved roads, beautiful avenues, and quiet lanes in search of, among other things, Castle Morluut, the Latemse Meersen, the Castle of Ooidonk, the Schipdonk canal, beautiful villas in Sint-Martens-Latem, old farms, ... The variation between forest paths, quiet lanes, banks of canals/rivers, and unpaved sections keeps the tour continually interesting. You'll find several atmospheric terraces along the way, and you can also visit the beautiful Castle of Ooidonk and its gardens (see website!). After Castle Ter Beken and Castle Claeys-Bouüaert, you reach back to the heart of Ghent through the Brugse Vaart. Time for another nice terrace: there's plenty of choices! read more

Leaves you wanting more

98.8 km

Departed from Stavele over a lyrical little bridge over the IJzer. The first municipality in France: Hondschoote: beauti...ful town hall with tourist information about the role of Hondschoote during WWI. Afterward, the bike ride continued over rolling farmlands, with various church towers and farms in the background. It took about thirty kilometers before I arrived in another village core where it was livelier. Very quickly, I then arrived in Bergues (Sint Winoksbergen), a very beautiful medieval town with medieval ramparts. Sint Winoksbergen is a water town with the oldest manually-dug canal. Also, the canal Basse Colme that connects Bergues with Veurne and Saint Omer. It is very beautiful to walk around, beautiful harbor. The people were extremely friendly. Around Bergues, I then rode through the forest and a car-free path to the somewhat higher located Socx, the division between the coastal landscape and the inland. This bike ride made me discover some lesser-known regions. read more

Maas Hedgerows route

50.4 km

Beautiful route through the Maasheggen (Unesco nature reserve) and over dikes and through forests along the Maas between... Boxmeer - Katwijk and Mook - Afferden. Along the way, you'll come across many beautiful picturesque spots, inviting you to dismount and explore further. In the Maasheggen area, you'll see the many woven hedges, made of living little trees, that have been keeping the cattle in the meadows since the Middle Ages. In the streams and small lakes along the way, there's a good chance you'll encounter beavers. There are plenty of rest stops, as well as terraces for a drink or a snack. Most of the route is on paved bike paths and there are no hills or tough sections along the way. The route can easily be shortened to 42 km by taking the bridge at Gennep over the Maas. read more

Relaxed day in Zeeland

63.5 km

There is no easier way to get to Vlissingen than by bike from Breskens. Near the ferry, there is a large free parking ar...ea. After the 20-minute crossing, we arrived in Vlissingen. Along the coast and a piece of nature reserve, we rode to Middelburg. In Middelburg, we deviated a little from our route to the cozy market with the city hall. Then we crossed the countryside, a tight polder landscape, just short enough to not be monotonous. Along the way, there was a welcome break with an ice cream parlor and a beekeeper in Poppendamme that you could visit. In Zoutelande, there was a great atmosphere, nice walking along the dike and a cozy shopping street with nice terraces! It was a pleasant place to stay. Then, the last and most beautiful part back to Vlissingen, car-free along forest and dunes. It reminded me of Limburg! Along the dike in Vlissingen, it was also beautiful, with lots of tourist information... it was definitely a relaxing bike ride. read more

Winding through the green Kempen

39.9 km

The starting point of this cycling route is in the provincial domain of Prinsenpark in Retie. This green oasis, together... with the forests, meadows, and countless cornfields along the route, forms the ideal backdrop for winding through the green Kempen. In Retie, you will pass by a grain watermill that has existed since the 14th century. There you will also find the tavern "'t Meulezicht" where you can take a drink break. The first part is unpaved, but then you continue your way mostly on paved roads while crossing the municipalities of Kasterlee, Geel, and Mol. In short: Enjoying (relaxing) the peace and greenery in the heart of the Kempen! read more
