Candle straight avenues and monumental buildings dominate the landscape in Merksplas-Kolonie. Vagrants used to live here, who were compulsorily sent to the Colony. Because they were poor, begged or caused a nuisance. They worked and lived there together. In 1993, this system came to an end.

Vagrants are no longer in the Colony. Their story, however, is still etched into the landscape. Merksplas-Kolonie is now an important heritage site with protected monuments in a protected landscape.

Once everything is open you can complete the walk with a visit to the prison museum and settle down on a terrace with a cool drink.
