Icon description route Description

The Rupel region is known for its brickmaking past. Yet not only bricks came out of the kiln here. At the beginning of the 20th century, tile production also belonged to the absolute world top. The Gilliot factory in Hemiksem produced floor and wall tiles for standard use and unique, artistically high-quality tile panels for special orders. For a long time, it was the largest and most modern tile factory in Europe. As a major employer, the factory has meant a great deal to the prosperity of the region. Because of its good value for money and attractive decors, Gilliot tiles were sought after at home and abroad.

Here and there in the streets you can still find traces of the beautiful Gilliot tiles. Reasons enough to go to the cradle, Hemiksem, in search of remnants of this fascinating past.

Wednesday, July 8, 2020 by M.S.Beginning and end of the route is beautiful. Otherwise, hours of walking between busy streets. We think this route is really overrated. We do not recommend it. However, Hemiksem has a beautiful area at the abbey and you come across a beautiful park at the end and just along the water at the end is included and a relaxation after the crowds. This is my opinion.
