Limburg, known as the cycling province of Flanders, has expanded its cycling node network with a unique experience: Cycling between the Mining Heaps. This new route in Hoge Kempen National Park features a 380-meter floating pontoon bridge. The route connects the iconic mining heaps of Eisden and offers an impressive perspective of the mining landscape.

Visit Limburg, one of our key partners, continues to innovate and surprise. With the launch of Cycling between the Mining Heaps, the Limburg cycling node network is being expanded with a breathtaking new cycling experience in Hoge Kempen National Park. This new cycling route connects the iconic mining heaps of Eisden via a 380-meter floating pontoon bridge, taking cyclists and walkers just above the water for a 360° view of the impressive mining landscape.

This project fits perfectly within the Limburg cycling node network, which already offers more than 2,000 kilometers of cycling pleasure. The node system, where you cycle from number to number, was launched almost three decades ago and has transformed the province into a true cycling paradise. Now, this latest cycling experience adds an extra dimension: a unique combination of nature, heritage, and innovative architecture.

Igor Philtjens, deputy and chairman of Visit Limburg, sees Cycling between the Mining Heaps as another important step in the further development of cycling tourism in Limburg: “With Cycling between the Mining Heaps, we not only offer a new cycling adventure but also a unique way to experience the beautiful nature and history of Limburg. This project underscores our ambition to put Limburg on the global map as a cycling destination.”

Fully integrated into the cycling network

Cyclists can explore the new route between cycling nodes 502 and 565, which leads them between the panoramic heap and the twin heaps of Eisden. The spiral-shaped bridge offers an unparalleled view of the landscape. Thanks to the transparent railing, the bridge seems to float above the water, providing a spectacular experience without disturbing the natural landscape.

Philtjens emphasizes the importance of continuous innovation within Limburg’s tourism offerings: “To remain a leader in cycling tourism, we must dare to innovate. Today’s tourist wants to be surprised. That’s why we choose architectural projects that allow people to experience our landscapes from a different perspective.”

Fourth Limburg cycling experience

The other three Limburg cycling experiences, such as Cycling through Water, Cycling through Trees, and Cycling through Heath, have put Limburg on the international map. With Cycling between the Mining Heaps, not only is an architectural masterpiece presented, but it also pays tribute to the industrial heritage of the mining region. The route connects the unique mining landscape with the rich history of coal mining and the subsequent nature restoration.

Philtjens concludes: “Our ambition is clear: we want to continue surprising visitors with innovative cycling experiences, but also use tourism as a means to improve the well-being and prosperity of all Limburg residents.”

Thanks to this new addition to the cycling network, cyclists can not only enjoy the Limburg nature but also experience a deeper connection to the landscape and history. Explore it yourself and enjoy the best that Limburg has to offer in a way you’ve never experienced before!
